(wo-)mansplaining: Garment Dye

WAT IS HET?

Voer de term garment dye in Google Translate en je krijgt ‘kledingstuk geverfd’. Dûh, lekker kort door de bocht - alle gekleurde kleding is toch in principe geverfd? Klopt bijna, maar nét niet helemaal. Vaak zijn gekleurde kledingstukken gemaakt van ingeverfde stoffen of gebreid van ingeverfde garens. Het inverven van stoffen en garens gebeurt vóórdat het uiteindelijke kledingstuk wordt geproduceerd. En daar hebben we het verschil te pakken: als een kant-en-klaar kledingstuk pas na afloop van het maakproces wordt ingeverfd spreken we van garment dyed. ‘Kledingstuk geverfd’. Mag in de krant: Google Translate nailed it.

HOE HERKEN JE HET?

Als een kledingstuk garment dyed is zie je subtiele kleurschakeringen, met name rond de naden. Daar waar de stof dubbellaags en/of doorgestikt is wordt relatief minder verfstof ‘opgezogen’. Nog een herkenningspuntje: witte waslabels aan de binnenzijde hebben een subtiele kleurzweem meegekregen. Ook de sierstiksels op doorgestikte naden hebben een iets andere tint omdat het garen soms net even anders ‘aanverft’ dan de stof, ook al heeft het stikgaren dezelfde samenstelling als de stof. Ontwerpers kunnen hier ook mee spelen: donkere contraststiksels of stiksels van 100% synthetisch garen kleuren niet mee en behouden hun oorspronkelijke kleur.

Naast ‘gewone’ garment dye verfstoffen bestaan er ook ‘garment pigment dye’ verfstoffen die wasbeurt na wasbeurt steeds een beetje meer vervagen. Vergelijkbaar voorbeeld uit de modegeschiedenis: de allereerste denim werd destijds ingeverfd met indigo, een 100% plantaardige verfstof die met de tijd op natuurlijke wijze vervaagde. Net als jeans heeft garment dyed kleding een casual uitstraling, maar meestal subtieler.

IS HET DUURZAAM?

Duurzaamheid is een complex begrip - enerzijds draait het om levensduur en tijdloosheid, anderzijds om de impact op mens en milieu.

Hét grote voordeel van garment dyeing: restanten worden effectief vermeden door uitsluitend naar behoefte te produceren, met ongeverfde stoffen waarvan de overgebleven meters weer voor toekomstige garment dyed items gebruikt kunnen worden. Bovendien: met het oog op de huidige ‘kledingberg’ kopen we bij PLEIN PUBLIQUE sowieso zuinig ‘op maat’ in.

Of een garment dyed wassing eco-friendly is ligt niet alleen aan de gebruikte verfstof, ook de waterconsumptie en de manier waarop het gebruikte water weer in de waterhuishouding terugvloeit wegen mee. Wat tegenwoordig voor vrijwel alle verfstoffen in de textielindustrie geldt: ze worden continu verder verbeterd en geoptimaliseerd om milieuschade te beperken.
