RAYON - Mother of man made magic

Cupro, tencel, viscose EcoVero, lyocell, modal… anyone who reads our product texts from A to Z will regularly be bombarded with these names (figuratively speaking, in real life we want to embrace you with warmth and softness ; ) Well, in our enthusiasm we sometimes forget that some technical terms really need some explanation. Mea culpa. Let's get you up to speed, it's time to go back to the basics...

RAYON
Mother of man made magic

Cupro, tencel, viscose EcoVero, lyocell, and modal all full under the subcategory of Rayon - the official name for man made plant-based textiles

The manufacturing process in a nutshell: wood and/or plant scraps are shredded and ground, pulped by adding liquid and pressed through the holes of 'spinnerets'. The resulting thin threads are called filaments. The filaments are then cut into fibers from which yarn is spun. Hocus pocus bops and bits: beautiful base material for fabrics and knits.

Now we hear you thinking, "But what's the deal with all those different names?" Easy: The difference lies mainly in the composition of the "base material."

VISCOSE was the very first rayon fiber made for the clothing industry, made from a blend of various plants and woods. In later generations, viscose was increasingly refined, and new type names emerged.

VISCOSE ECOVERO is viscose from the innovative Swiss manufacturer Lenzing, made using a sustainable process and bearing the patented brand name EcoVero.

CUPRO is made with cotton plant waste and bamboo pulp.

MODAL is made from beechwood pulp.

LYOCELL/TENCEL™ is made from eucalyptus wood pulp. (Tencel™ is the same as lyocell, but the name Tencel™ is the official brand name of the Swiss textile manufacturer Lenzing).

What do cupro, tencel, viscose, EcoVero, lyocell, and modal have in common? Spoiler alert: their commonalities also give away why we love them so much.

    • They are all made from plant-based materials
    • They are all flexible
    • They are all breathable
    • They are all wonderful to wear
    • They all stay beautiful for a long time

One might be a little shinier, the other might wrinkle a little more (or less) and another might show more vivid colours, and so on and so forth. Leave the right choice to us; we know what we're doing : )

From now on, when you see a blend with cupro, tencel, viscose EcoVero, lyocell, or modal, you'll know what's up. And that the blend is spot on on all the important fronts.

Now that you're here, why not take a look at our new arrivals?
