HOW, THEN?
~ The “over-the-knee” skirt ~
As you’ve probably read in several of our blogs, we love writing about all kinds of things when it comes to fashion. But we often get asked…“That’s a cool trend, but how do you actually wear it?” For us, it’s often obvious how to style a piece of clothing, but apparently not for everyone. So here you go—our first blog post on “#howto.”
We’ll start with the new skirt: the one that goes over the knee.
The “over-the-knee” skirt
You’ve probably already seen this skirt around. On our site, in magazines, on social media, or just out on the street. This skirt is making a comeback! You’ll be seeing it everywhere this coming spring, and it’s a must-have for your wardrobe.
The great thing about today’s version is the length—it falls just past the knee. Plus, the skirt flares out widely. Anyone can wear it. By the way, did you know that this style of skirt hasn’t really been in fashion for as long as I’ve been in the fashion industry. That’s about 25 years! So you can’t really say, “Do I still have one in my closet?” because chances are, if you do, it’s probably eaten by the moths by now.
Anyway, back to that skirt. How do you actually wear it?
With a sweater
Let’s get into it. The trend for this new skirt, of course, originated with influencers, who wear it with big, oversized sweaters. It looks cool and stylish, of course… if you’re a size mini and don’t want to look feminine. But most of us aren’t a size XS, so that look doesn’t work so easily. For example, I’m a D-cup, and I end up looking like a big, square farm girl when I let my sweater hang casually over the skirt.
Still, you, too, can wear this skirt with a chunky sweater or a cozy knit. Just tuck the front of your sweater in a little bit (also known as the “French tuck”). That way, you create a waistline—and thus some shape—in your outfit. If you’re about to freak out and say that won’t work with your tummy, just relax and tuck the sweater more toward the side of your skirt. Trust me, it looks really cool and makes you look a bit more feminine. Just give it a try in front of the mirror.
Office style
Are there other ways to style the skirt? Yes, of course! Because you can’t show up to work in a big sweater. So a white blouse is the best choice. Always a good look, always comfortable, and always stylish.
Party time
But… the holidays… What about those?
As I mentioned above, this skirt can be worn in many different ways. For the holidays, you can look super feminine. With a pretty spaghetti-strap top and some jewelry, you’ll quickly look festive and stylish. Pair it with a pair of nice heels or boots, and you’re ready to party, lady.
Summer & winter!
Yep, you can wear these skirts perfectly well in winter, but also in summer.
And as you may know, at PLEIN PUBLIQUE we love beautiful pieces that you can wear season after season. Pieces that last longer than just one or two seasons. And this skirt is one of those pieces. This coming spring, skirts are going to be all the rage, because the white T-shirt is making a comeback.
And there’s nothing easier than pairing a nice white T-shirt with your new skirt. Isn’t that an argument?
Well… that’s it for the kickoff. This was the first blog post about how to wear the latest fashion. Did you like it? Hopefully so, because we have even more in store. Stay tuned!
Love, Nicole
