Giving Back 1%: Green Minds Think Alike

Oui à l’Amour! We feel love for Mother Earth and everything she helps grow and flourish. There is so much to be grateful for, which is why we give 1% of our revenue back to nature.

Short answer

Together, we can achieve more than we can do alone! Through our Giving Back 1% initiative, we’re joining forces with the Dutch organization Natuurmonumenten and the Belgian organization Natuurpunt. Discover how, by collaborating with “great green minds,” we’re building a sustainable future and making the greatest possible impact on nature and the environment.

NATURE BELONGS TO US ALL

Under the motto “Nature Belongs to Us All,” in 2024 we chose to make a cross-border joint donation to the Dutch organization Natuurmonumenten and the Belgian organization Natuurpunt. It’s a wonderful way to celebrate our growing friendship with Belgium—because, wow, those Belgian ladies really know where to find us… the PLEIN PUBLIQUE packages are flying across the border like never before. We clearly share a love for natural materials :-)

GREAT GREEN MINDS THINK ALIKE

Natuurmonumenten and Natuurpunt are committed to similar causes, such as promoting and protecting biodiversity, ensuring clean and healthy water management, preparing for climate change, and education. What we love so much about both organizations is that they don’t take a preachy approach—instead, they focus on “enjoying nature.” How inspiring and motivating!

ONE PLANET

The planet knows no borders; it is humans who use a dotted line on a map to
demarcate their territory. For effective and efficient nature conservation, neighbouring countries should ideally join forces. Take the peatlands in the border region between the Netherlands and Belgium: their shared history—after Napoleon’s partition, the Netherlands and Belgium together formed the United Kingdom of the Netherlands—makes a joint initiative to protect the peatlands more than logical. Even though the Netherlands and Belgium are now “happily separated,” such an initiative did come about: a partnership among 10 organizations, including our national conservation giants Natuurmonumenten (NL) and Natuurpunt (BE).

PROJECT ADMIRE

In the interregional ADMIRE project, 10 Flemish and Dutch partners
are working together across borders to address peatland issues. The project prioritizes the conservation, restoration, and management of these areas through a broad collaborative effort, while also investigating the climate impact of these important natural habitats.!

Peatlands are the habitat for many plant and animal species, including numerous European protected species found exclusively in these unique ecosystems. Peatlands play a key role in preventing floods and droughts. Furthermore, peatlands have the remarkable ability to store large amounts of CO2 in the soil.

However, peatlands are under pressure worldwide and are even at risk of disappearing as a result of agriculture-related drainage, extraction, or water pollution. Lowering the groundwater level, peat extraction, and/or an increased influx of nutrients can accelerate the loss of peatlands, resulting in increased CO2 emissions.

The project will address six areas—totaling about 251 hectares—including the Kleine Nete Valley (BE) and the Dommel and Kleine Dommel Valley (NL). In addition to restoration and management, ADMIRE aims to establish a sustainable partnership with stakeholders (such as farmers) in the various transition areas to explore opportunities for adapted land management.
